2.2 Logistics.
A key element to the success of this field trip is logistics. Specifically determining:
- The number of boats, kayaks, and canoes to transport everyone onto and off Goat Island.
- Qualified motor boat operators to help ferry people and gear to and from Goat Island.
- The amount of fuel needed for the motorboats.
- Places where people can park their vehicles for the day.
- The number of carpool drivers to shuttle people from the boat landings to their cars.
- People to haul trash we collect off of Goat Island to a place where the trash can be legally deposited.
- The amount of fresh drinking water and first aid supplies to have available.
- The number of shade structures and camp toilets to bring.
- The number of people to monitor the base camps on the island and the landings to protect personal property during the field trip.
- Hosts for all the planned event caches that will be part of this field trip.
The more people who attend, the more challenging the logistics will be. There will be costs. We need to ensure that the costs are equitably distributed among all who get to enjoy the field trip. We also need to ensure we acquire the correct amount of supplies. Too much or too little will cut into our enjoyment. Therefore, we need a list of all who are willing to make a reasonable commitment to going.

Hauling collected trash off the island for proper disposal: MNRR |
Many of these roles will take cache hunters away from actually hunting caches on the island. Since these roles are necessary, I propose that we bend a few rules for them. Their cache hunting team will be allowed to put their volunteer’s name on logs their team finds. Those who volunteer for these roles are doing more than a fair share in finding the caches on the island. I say letting their teammates look out for them is fair.
